About

An accounting practice built on thirty-eight years inside the finance function.

Mansel Financial exists because controller-level experience is useful well below the size of business that can employ it full time. A company with twenty staff, three hundred customers and a lender asking questions has the same reporting problem as a large one. It simply cannot justify a salaried controller to solve it.

01The story

Mansoor Elahi trained at KPMG, where the habit the rest of his career has run on was formed: a file that can be handed to somebody else and still make sense.

Since 1988 he has been a chief accountant, a finance manager, an accounting manager, a consultant inside a chartered professional accounting firm and, most recently, a controller. The work has rarely been the textbook version. He closed the books of a national golf equipment wholesaler while leading its migration onto Oracle NetSuite. He ran cash flow and consolidation for a multi-store retailer as it expanded into Los Angeles and New Jersey, registering payroll accounts with the California Employment Development Department after a merger. And he held the accounting function together for a group of private colleges while a court-appointed receiver was in place, reconciling tuition collections daily against a trust account and preparing cut-off statements for the buyer.

Mansel Financial brings that experience to businesses that need it a few days a month rather than five days a week, and to individuals who want their tax return prepared by someone who reads the slips and asks the questions. The practice is deliberately small, the scope is always written down first, and one person is accountable for the ledger, the returns and the advice.

02How the practice works

Four commitments. Not a philosophy.

Four things a client should be able to hold the practice to, and notice immediately if they stop happening.

  1. 01

The close runs on a calendar

Dates are agreed at the start of the year and published. The reporting pack arrives on the same working day each month, whether or not it contains good news.

  2. 02

    Scope is written down first

An engagement letter sets out deliverables, deadlines and fee before work begins. If the scope changes, that is a conversation, not a surprise on an invoice.

  3. 03

    One person is accountable

The person who scoped the work does the work. Nothing is passed down to a junior you have not met, and there is no account manager between you and the ledger.

  4. 04

    Filings are met early

Statutory deadlines are worked back from, not run at. Where a prior year was filed incorrectly, it gets amended rather than quietly left in place.
